Placeholder rings are sterling silver replicas of ring settings from our collection! These are used in-lieu of a finished ring for proposal if you are on a tight timeline or as a travel ring!
Most collection styles are available as placeholder rings and cost $150 before tax.
Placeholder rings are sterling silver base and plated with 18K gold or rhodium, set with a 2 carat cubic zirconia stone, and available in US sizes 4 - 8
It takes up to 7 business days to resize and refurbish placeholder rings, and they will be shipped overnight to you.
Post proposal, the placeholder ring can be traded in and credited towards a purchase of $4,000 or more.
Placeholder rings are not eligible for return, repair, nor remake.
They are excluded from our warranty as well as our complimentary care plan.
Since they are sterling silver and plated, they will wear down with frequent wear as well as contact with chemicals. Silver is a soft metal, thus could bend and break with a hard enough hit.
All of our jewelery pieces are hand made in the heart of NYC with our bench jewelers in the Diamond District!
We use recycled gold and platinum as they are plentiful already in circulation. We get our metal from refineries, and also send our scrap metal back to the same refineries to continue recycling metal.
Recycled gold is reclaimed from post-consumer sources and re-refined. It’s exactly the same as newly mined gold without the environmental damage. Our sources include recycled jewelry, industrial products, and electronics.
Yes, we plate all our white gold rings with rhodium unless you request otherwise. Rhodium gives white gold a whiter, brighter look!
If you don't want rhodium plating, just email us at hello@frankdarling.com!

Our 18K gold alloy is 75% gold, 15% silver, and 10% copper.
Our 14K white gold is 6.12% Zinc, 22.92% Copper, 11.67% Nickel, .79% Other, and 58.5% Gold
Our 18K white gold alloy is 75% gold, 14% copper, 5% zinc and 6% nickel.
Our platinum alloy is 95% platinum and 5% ruthenium, another member of the platinum family.
Our 18K rose gold is 75% gold, 24% copper, 1% silver with trace elements of zinc. The zinc accentuates the color of the copper and gives it a lovely blush pink hue. We currently dont offer 14k rose gold as it tarnishes much faster due to the higher copper content.
Generally, your pave diamonds won't take a tumble unless you give your ring a good smack. But hey, accidents happen, right?
To be on the safe side, consider an eternity band that is one-half or three-quarter inches thick. It's a fabulous way to keep your pave in place while looking fierce. Additionally, keep in mind that pave diamonds on prongs are a little more delicate and vulnerable, so just be sure to handle them with a little extra loving care to ensure longevity.
For fully custom engagement rings, they average around $3-5k starting!
This is a combination of center stone choice, as well as design changes to the setting. Everything is priced similarly to our settings on our website.
Rings purchased directly off of our website takes around 3 weeks from order date.
Each order will have an estimated ship by date attached.
Custom rings vary based on complexity, but generally alsso follow a lead time of 3-4 weeks from CAD Approval date.
Absolutely. All of our settings can be customized. Get started by requesting a free sketch here or emailing hello@frankdarling.com to chat with a designer.
Take the ring quiz to get started. Sketches are free, and you can request as many as you like. This is a great way to quickly visualize different designs.
When you're ready to get serious, book a consultation with one of our designers! You'll want to get started about five weeks before whenever you're hoping to have the ring.
Your designer will work with you over email to help you visualize your ring design through photos and high fidelity sketches.
Once your ring design is finalized, your designer will curate a list of stones for you to choose from based on your quality requirements and desired price point. We work with natural diamonds, lab grown diamonds, moissanite, and gemstones. We're able to bring stones into our office prior to purchase and send additional photos and videos to help you compare and ultimately choose a stone!
Once your order is placed, we'll make a 3D model of your ring. This takes about a week. Once it's ready, we'll send you a digital PDF to approve with a rendering of your ring. If you like we can also send you a 3D printed plastic prototype to test the fit and preview the design.
After you approve the CAD mockup, we'll make the ring! The making of takes about three weeks.
One 3D mockup + two rounds of minor revisions are included with your order. If you change your mind after seeing your 3D mock-up or receiving your resin prototype and want to go with a different ring design, this is an additional $350 and is non-refundable.
Yes! You can purchase an additional CAD mockup and 3D printed model for $350. The second CAD is non-refundable.
Unfortunately, no. Only the CAD mockup of the design you’re going forward with can be credited towards your order.
Unfortunately, no. The CAD deposit is non-refundable and can’t be credited towards a different ring design.
Yes, we can send you a 3D printed resin model to test the fit and preview the design, but we don’t cover the cost of shipping. Cost of shipping range around $100 and is non-refundable.
Quotes for custom settings and bands (excluding the center stone) are valid for two weeks and can change based on the price of materials and labor.
We believe that your engagement ring should last you a lifetime of love. That’s why we recommend picking stones that are rated 9 and up on the Mohs Scale of Hardness. This nifty scale grades gemstones on their ability to withstand scratching on a scale of 1 to 10 with 1 being akin to the softness of chalk and 10 being the hardest of the hard.
And when it comes to hard, you can’t get much harder than diamonds. These beauties rank 10/10 on the Mohs scale proving that nothing is quite as tough as a diamond. Not into diamonds? You have options! Moissanite (9.5), sapphire (9), and ruby (also,9) all rank highly as well without sacrificing on that ooh-la-la sparkle. Anything lower than 9 can run the risk of being scratched during daily wear and tear which can result in higher costs down the road not to mention heartbreak. But we know that the heart wants what it wants so we're happy to work with and set any of the following precious center and accent stones.
We’re known for our light, airy bezels. On average, our bezels finish around .5mm but this can be customized if you have a preference.
The thinnest we make our rings is 1.5mm. We do not make bands thinner than this width.
Our mill grain detailing is done by hand. In certain cases, where there isn’t enough room, it’s cast into the ring.
Around .75- .9mm when finished, depending on the center stone size.
Our classic prong finish is a claw prong, sometimes also referred to as a talon. We can also do round prongs or square prongs. To make this change, please email hello@frankdarling.com!
When considering how high is too high-the sky really is the limit. Just be sure to remember that Medium and High Profile rings are more prone to hitting more surfaces and thus are more susceptible to damage.
Another thing to consider? How often you find yourself using your hands in daily life so ask yourself: are you wild with your hands? Do you tend to use them a lot in your day-to-day activities? If the answer is a resounding yes, a low-profile ring may be the perfect setting for you. After all, you want to show off that ring without the worry of it taking damage - ain't nobody got time for that.
Ultimately, your perfect height is going to be a balance of form and functionality. Whether you're reaching for the stars or keeping those feet on the ground, it's all about what makes you feel the most fabulous while keeping your bling safe and protected, so trust your gut and go for what feels right for you.
Thin may be in, but when it comes to the thickness of your engagement ring, we've got some recommendations. So, here's the skinny:
You might be tempted to go sleek and slender with a ring thinner than 1.5mm, but trust us, it may not be the wisest choice. Why? Well, anything less than 1.5mm will have a tough time holding up to the daily wear and tear that your fabulous engagement ring will go through. In fact, 1.5mm rings are already slightly more fragile than their thicker counterparts. Going for any less band may result in your setting getting quite literally whacked out of shape simply by just grabbing something a little too hard. So make sure your ring is at least 1.5mm or larger. This way, it's bound to last through any champagne toasts, spontaneous dance parties, and Insta-worthy moments you throw at it.

While we can show you the inscription of prong-set diamonds due to the open-style nature of the ring, we're unable to view the diamond inscription if it has been set in our bezel or half-bezel styles. This is because the bezel or half-bezel band encases the side of the diamond with the inscription.
Rest assured, throughout the diamond production process, we meticulously check your diamond's inscription multiple times to ensure its accuracy. We leave no room for error and are committed to delivering a perfectly set stone.

Not sure if your ring broke as a result of manufacturing defects or regular wear and tear? At Frank Darling, we are proud of our quality assurance and thoroughly check every aspect of your ring to ensure that every aspect, from the setting of the stones to the type of metal, is in line with our standards. As a result, if your ring was damaged more than 6 months after purchase, it is usually due to wear and tear and not a manufacturer’s issue. We’re still happy to check your ring and determine the cause of the issue, but the repair will be on a case by case basis and may not be covered by your warranty. Simply follow the steps below and we’ll be happy to help you out.
Email us at hello@frankdarling.com and describe your problem.
Once you receive your receipt we will process your case in between 2-3 days.
A dedicated client care representative or designer will reach out to you shortly after to discuss the necessary steps to fix your ring and set up a general guideline to when you can expect its return.
Depending on the work needed, your ring will be adjusted between 1-4 weeks.
Our complimentary care plan is like having your very own personal ring concierge. We will take care of all of your little maintenance needs so your engagement ring stays as stunning as it was the day you said, 'yes'!
Included in the plan is free resizing, polishing, and prong tightening for life for all engagement rings in which the center stone was purchased through us at list price.
But here's the thing: we want your ring to stay fabulous, not flimsy. That's why we can't resize rings that pose a risk of breaking or compromising the integrity of the design. This includes ultra-thin bands or infinity bands with diamonds all around. We want your ring to withstand the test of time, so we can only resize those that meet our strict standards for safety and durability.
Now, let's talk logistics. We provide an insured shipping label for your convenience, so you can send your ring to us and back again with ease. However, please note that shipping costs are not included in the complimentary care plan. But don't worry, we've got you covered with reduced rates. Depending on the value of your ring, it'll cost you between $20 to $100 each way. It's a small price to pay for peace of mind, don't you agree?
Oh, and one last detail: our complimentary care plan is currently available for US orders only. We're always working on expanding our services, so keep an eye out for updates from us!

Insuring your ring provides you with the best security against loss or damage. It’s also easy to get. Like, astoundingly easy. Many homeowner’s and renter’s insurance programs offer engagement ring coverage up to a certain point however, if you want to ensure full coverage or just explore other options, consider shopping around to find insurance that matches your budget as well as your needs.
If your damaged ring is over 6 months old and already insured, reach out to your insurance provider to begin the claims process. Each insurer requires different documentation so be sure to contact your provider with any questions.

There’s possibly nothing quite as maddening as designing your dream ring only to find that it is a size too big or small. Not to fear, Frank Darling offers one free resizing and shipping for domestic orders of engagement rings or wedding bands in addition to free resizing for life.
Another important thing to note: as much as we wish we could resize certain rings like eternity bands, their unique structure makes it quite impossible. As a result, these rings are allowed to be exchanged for the correct size under our return policy.
Please note: If you opted to ship your ring within the USA initially, but you live internationally, you are responsible for duties and taxes of your full item purchase amount once it has been shipped back into your country after a repair. Frank Darling is not liable for any customs and duty charges in this scenario.
Our collection style rings are eligible for free 30-day returns for an in-store exchange or full refund. Simply mail your return with our complimentary UPS air shipping with its original documentation.

Your return window begins from the original date your purchase is ready to ship or be picked up, and if you request a special later delivery, your return date will remain the same as its original shipping date. Layaway orders are not eligible for returns more than 60 days after the first payment and all certified diamonds must be returned with original certificate or a $250 fee will be charged. Finally, any jewelry that has been deemed misused or taken to a third-party jeweler is not eligible for returns, and only one ring per customer can be returned every 6 months.
Our custom designed rings are eligible to be returned with complimentary UPS air shipping, however, thanks to the custom-nature of the ring, there are some stipulations to keep in mind.
